Why It Matters
Patients who do not speak the dominant care language experience roughly 30% higher rates of harmful clinical events. Translation helps. But it does not tell you that a patient is frightened, that the word they used does not map cleanly to the clinical concept, or that the language they are currently speaking is not the one noted in their file.
